Just 18 Summers

There is this impactful 18 summers quote making its way around the mom circles of social media worlds. It says “We get 18 delicious summers with our children. This is one of your 18. If that’s not perspective, I don’t know what is.” By Jessica Scott.

That one hits me hard. You know why? This is summer number 11 for me. I’m well past the half way point here and I really don’t like that one little bit! So instead of spiraling with regretful worry that I haven’t taken full advantage of the last 11 summers which would be so easy for me to do, I’m letting those words fuel me for this summer, for this right now! That’s why I just keep scrolling when I see all those articles posted on social media about “let your kid be bored” and “I’m not my kids entertainment director.” Cause I am the party planner in this party of 3 and my kids still get bored and end up doing things like hot glueing random crap to tooth brushes. (Yes that really happened this week.) And I’m letting that quote fuel me to put my swimsuit on again, get back in the car again, let the girls invite a friend again and find the next adventure again. It fuels me when the whining is sucking me dry and when the money spent is giving me serious anxiety. And it fuels me when all I want to do is lay on the couch or zone out and look at my phone. I just really want us all to remember summer number 11 as a great summer spent together out of all 18 summers. So far I think we are doing a pretty outstanding job at that!

Last Week the girls went to another VBS at St Anne’s Catholic Church where the Ostermann’s go. They had a really fantastic time for 5 mornings in a row with the fab 5 girls and Mrs Dede who made it so great for Riley! Both Keagan and Riley loved the Bible story’s being acted out by Will and a bunch of others, the outdoor games, the crafts, the fun counselors, the singing and dancing, snacks and videos. We were kind of a last minute sign up and we are all so glad we did!

One day after VBS we went swimming and one day Mrs Dede took all the girls to the game board park for a picnic and play and then home for a water balloon fight!

I hung out with Grace again, we are surprisingly still keeping up with our Come Follow Me lessons and we participated in a Light the World in July campaign in Instagram for kids to show they believe in Christ!

We had the most hysterical laughter filled night going to Costco and World Market with Mrs Taryn. We tried a bunch of new drinks and candy some of which we absolutely hated and some of which got spit everywhere in my car because I couldn’t hold back the laughter. We also came home with a fart machine, a giant whoppie cushion and a random plastic lizard named Fred that Riley has been sleeping with.

One night we celebrated Reagan’s birthday with a family dinner where both Taryn and Sa were wearing their Team Riley shirt. And we had another big family dinner when the Texas Ginn’s were in town and staying with us for the night. That night we also did our leftover fireworks and Keags and Campbell had a cute sleepover. Cousins are the absolute best and we also loved having the dogs here too!

We had an absolute blast at an Astros game the other night too! We went with the Fosters, the French’s and Keagan invited Lauren. It was actually LDS night so Elder Bednar threw out the first pitch and the missionaries in the South Houston mission sang the national anthem. Our seats were super high and super hot, my body hated all the stairs and there were other crazy happenings but we had SO much fun! Plus a win of 11-1 over Oakland was a cherry on top!

We got a new ring video doorbell which the girls are obsessed with and it’s a long story but we got to ride in a pony drawn carriage one night too!

Today Riley did an awesome job at the dentist, Keagan rocked her helpful and supportive role and then we absolutely had to take advantage of the cold front that blew in amazing weather by going to one of our very favorites the Hermann Park train! 89 degrees in July in Houston with low humidity is heaven and we loved it!

Today we also packed for our Chicago trip which we leave for tomorrow. If will be one of our biggest summer highlights! And it will definitely make summer number 11 memorable and great! Good thing because apparently I only get 18 summers with these two! 7 more left and I promise I will do what I can to make them count! Meanwhile number 11 summer is feeling pretty darn great indeed.
