Goodbye 5th Grade

It’s the end of an era. The end of SO much. And I know it sounds crazy dramatic, but the end of life as the Kikuchi girls know it. Que the momma tears!

Keagan and Riley have officially graduated from 5th grade and elementary school. They are ready for 6th grade, for middle school and they will no longer attend the school I work at as they have for the last 5 years! Man was it great while it lasted! So it’s all very bitter sweet and emotional for me and even for them because all but two of their friends will be going to different middle schools. Plus because of Corona quarantine all schools have been closed since mid March so the end of this era looked VERY different then we all thought it would. But we still tried really hard to celebrate them and this huge right of passage that they worked hard to achieve!

We had a great time decorating the house together to kick of the celebrations! And then each girl attended award ceremony Zoom calls with their class, teachers and administration. Keagan received the Aspiring Academics award for working so hard this year and was named the top female music student for 5th grade! Riley received the Positive Purpose award for being the incredible girl she is! And yes I did cry thru each Zoom because our principal Mrs Mason talked about how great these kids are and how amazingly they have adapted and risen to every occasion. And Mrs Acosta shared the sweetest slide show to “You’ve Got a Friend In Me!”

Afterwards we joined the Ostermann’s and the Lake’s in the Ostermann’s driveway to all decorate our cars in preparation of drive thru graduation! It was so great to see our friends that we have missed so much and for us mommas to commiserate that our babies are getting way too old and will no longer be at the same school together!

Wednesday May 27th was the day of 5th grade drive thru graduation! We met the Ostermann’s and Lakes at the front of the school to put the finishing touches on the decorated cars and take last day of school photos. We also ran into a few friends up there and shed a few tears.

Then we pulled around back to parade thru the organized lines of returning library books, picking up the students personal belongings, awards and 5th grade gift bags that I had previously helped with a little bit. We also got to see all our administrators and LAMP teachers and totally celebrate with the great 5th grade teachers! Seeing all of them and the several different friends we ran into was definitely the best part of it all! After we met up with the Ostermann’s and Lakes again for more big hugs and to compare contents of the 5th grade gifts (crazy socks, respective middle school water bottles and jump passes for when we can all get together again at Altitude Jump Park) we went to pick up big Sonic drinks and delivered to all those teachers and administrators who we love cause they were working so hard in the heat at school. Plus it was something good to do instead of be sad!!

The girls big 5th grade party was supposed to be a glow in the dark theme party at school that day before corona canceled everything. So our final celebration was to do the glow in the dark stick people dance party with the Ostermann’s and Lakes over Zoom! It definitely didn’t look like the big extravagant planned party with all 148 5th graders but we still had a really great time!

Last night the girls got to celebrate graduation with their dad, Grandma Debbie and Auntie Kat! Their dad ordered them pizza for dinner from Hawaii and they all ate pizza together over FaceTime! There was lots of great laughter coming from the kitchen!

We’ve got the girls final elementary school report cards (they did great) and filled out our tradition of last day of school survey to pack up in the school memory books. We have compared their first and last day of  5th grade photos and even their first and last day of elementary school photos. And we have even booked a quick beach getaway to Port Aransas with Mrs Heather and Calli to celebrate at the end of July when it’s a little safer. The girls feel thoroughly celebrated and loved so minus getting our last year books which are delayed because of corona we are officially done.

I am SO proud of Keagan and Riley for all they have learned, accomplished, grown and loved over the last 6 years! And I wish I could personally hug and thank every teacher, para, specialist, counselor, administrator, aide and therapist that helped them, taught them and loved them! Because they seriously had some of the very best in the business! I will miss these girls tremendously since we will no longer be at the same school, and their transition will be a big one especially not doing it with their old school friends. But they are ready! They are ready to unite with lots of old friends, make new friends and new beautiful memories, learn a ton, accomplish big things and become Doerre Warriors! I can not wait to see all that they do next!
